I've been helping another member on here with his pond the last couple years and it is coming along wonderfully. Today we did a seine survey for the first time. It was encouraging to only collecting BG and LMB as the pond has some age to it and we just weren't sure if any other species may have been bucket stocked over the years. We never saw any signs of RES in the pond so last year he stocked 200 RES. We got lucky the hatchery he bought from had many in the 6" range with a couple pushing 8". Well, in our one run of the seine through a small cove we must have ran over the beds where the RES are spawning as we came up with several nice sized RES in the haul. So we were very pleased to see that it appears the RES have taken hold and are spawning. Seine surveys are a great way to see what is making babies in your pond and how fast those babies are growing.
Sorry, no pics today.

Good to hear Travis. Great when things go as planned! Sure hope you can put those skills to use on your own pond soon. With your knowledge and expertise it's a shame you haven't been able to afford your own pond yet due to outrageous land prices in your area.
But on the bright side think of all you've learned and are learning that will be put to use on your own pond!

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Seine surveys are better than a Fyke Net survey in my eyes because all species should be caught. LMB (and SMB I've found) avoid getting caught in Fyke Nets.
The problem with seine surveys is when there is heavy weed growth or cover placed in the pond that interferes with pulling the seine.

or when your pond is like a fish bowl and not much area to easily seine.
or an older pond full of muck that is hard to walk in.
Both issues we have.
