I have some floating algae in my 1/2 acre pond. Should I try to take it out or just leave it.

That's a rather complicated question, that involves 1) how much is "some", 2) does it bother you, and 3) does it hurt your nude bowling score?

Do a search for threads on "filamentous algae" (I'd look first in "Controlling Unwanted Plants" and "Questions & Observations") and you can see some of the aspects of having FA in your pond. Some people abhore it, some don't mind, and of course levels of infestation vary greatly. The forum entries on FA will present several sides and possible solutions to the FA issue.

If you want to control/eliminate it, some possiblities are chemical (herbicide) control, physical removal (raking it out), trying to prevent it from growing with Aquashade or something similar, and having it eaten by stocking Tilapia (Grass Carp really don't eat much FA).

I'd leave it alone. I wouldn't want anything to effect my nude bowling score! ;\)

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Spencer,

We had a similar problem a couple years ago with big mats of floating algae. They would nearly cover the pond in the heat of the day then sink again overnight. We installed aerators and dosed it with bacteria in addition to adding dye. After a lot of raking we managed to get it under control; but my back hurt and I'm sure it took a few pins off my nude bowling score. We don't use granular copper sulfate any more but would probably use a light dose of cutrine plus sprayed directly on the mats from a boat if needed.

Some have had success with barley straw put in early enough as a preventative measure.

Yeah, My score is suffering a little from my stress from this being in there. I didn't know people actually looked at my hobbies. LOL
