I just realized there are relatively few natural lakes in the Southeast (outside of Florida) and was just wondering why? I'm guessing it has something to do with the soil which is mostly red clay but man-made lakes are just about everywhere you look so it must hold water? I guess the land not being flat also has something to with it but I'd like to get the real answer if anybody knows. Seems to be lots of knowledgeable folks on this board.

Thanks
-Kurt

I may be wrong but... south of where glaciers went, the surface of the land is so old that any basins have long since filled with sediments, or rivers/creeks have cut through any potential dams a long time ago.

Imagine how our man-made ponds would look in 1000 years, let alone 100,000! You probably couldn't even tell they were there even knowing what to look for.

Areas with limestone dissolving away underground opening up collapsing caverns are another story.
