Pond Location - South Louisiana Size - 4 acres and 3 to 6 feet deep
This year, the first year after renovating and stocking the pond we suffered a severe fish kill. In August the pond was overtaken with floating algae then phytoplankton got so thick all visibility was lost and then on the first cloudy day we had a major fish kill. I am of the belief that we had excessive nutrients in the pond causing the algae take over, the pond had been fertilized in the spring but there was little to no bloom so we did not continue to fertilize. We do plan to lime and restock this winter. Can an aeration system help control the algae bloom? Excessive nutrients? The pond is “L” shaped, should we aerate on both ends? What type of aerators would be recommended?
Thanks for reading any input would be ppreciated.
