I sure hope this is correct. We can use all the moisture we can get. This is what's supposed to happen on Wed. Unfortunately, 3 days away is a VERY long time. For the time period of 21-1-2012 thru 2-28-2013 we are slightly more than 40% below normal precip. averages.

Yeah, I saw a similar map. They are saying ours could be a "crippling snow." I sure wish they would have chosen a different color for my neighborhood.
Oh well, the chains and plow are still the UTV. The rear blade and loader are on the tractor, and I can put chains on the front and back if needed.

I don't think we will get much more snow up here. Temp's are rising and rain is on the way. Spring Flood's are next!

Local weather says upper 40's after the storm passes. I hope we DO get the 8"-9" of snow, then the warm weather and rain. More runoff is better for my pond.

The storm dropped some glare ice. As usual we are on the short end of the precipitation.

Us, too, Dwight. Got some rain, and then it froze overnight. No snow so far, although sounds like we might get an inch or snow of the wrap-around on the back end.

National Weather Service forecast last night said the following: "Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. New precipitation between a quarter and a half inch." Since when is a quarter to a half inch considered 'heavy snow'?
Of course, these are the same jackwagons that said parts of the DC region could get 'slammed' with two inches of snow. Another example of the wussification of America.
Ouch, I just fell off of my soap box, someone get me free healthcare.
I am very glad to see all the snow through our mid section, though. That is good stuff for the groundwater and our ponds.

Excuse me, sir, but we're going to need to see your permit for soapbox construction first, to include all Environmental Impact Statements, proof of notification of public interest, any and all responses to said notification, complete surveys of all existing conditions at said soapbox construction site, and engineer stamped as-built documentation of said soapbox construction. We require these in triplicate, individually separated with original signatures at all appropriate locations as well as digital copes in .PDF format for our records. As you have apparently not followed proper process for soapbox construction, you are hereby notified that all permit applications must also be completed and submitted, including all submittal and review fees, with 15% penalty for late filing fees included. At this time, please be aware that your use of said soapbox and soapbox location is expressly forbidden, effective immediately. A federal regulatory lein has been filed on this property at your county courthouse – should you wish to obtain copies of this lein, it is your responsibility to file request to view applications and pay all viewing and copying fees. You have three (3) months to appeal this lein. At the end of the three month period, your right to appeal will become void, and your property will revert to the federal government. You are still liable for any and all back taxes and fees.
To Hell with Georgia...

Charlottesville, Roanoke, Harrisonburg and Winchester, Va.; Frederick and Hagerstown, Md. and Martinsburg, W.Va. appear to have some of the greatest snow potential. This potential would be dangerous, travel-haulting snow. This is for my neighborhood. We're in the 12+ forecast range. We'll see. I just wish it wasn't so darn cold and windy. We had "ice out" on the ponds for a few days last week, but it reformed on Thursday. The ponds are all white again, as we had snow flurries from Thursday through yesterday.

85 here today and a high of 55 tomorrow.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

All I know is that it is still damn cold here!
The chickens were glad to see me with some warm water, as all their watering cans/pans had frozen solid since early this morning.
I just came in from servicing the tractor in case the weather dudes and dudettes are right. I also put the chains back on the tractor. I gassed up the UTV, and filled the dump bed with several hundred pounds of rip-rap. The UTV is my first line of defense -- since it has a 5'foot snow plow, chains on the tires, BUT MOST IMPORTANT -- a cab with a windshield and roof!
Damn, it is cold and windy out there!

Damn, it is cold and windy out there! Second that, helped the neighbor get a new born calf into the safety of the barn this morning. He lost one last week in the storm and didn't want to lose this one.

I'm sure glad I installed a whole-house generator a while back -- I'm near the bottom of the "W" and "E" in "POWER" on the map above. I'm just taking a warm-up break from filling the basement and front porch wood racks, from the woodshed. The forecasters have been wrong before. I sure hope they are wrong this time too, 'cause they still have us in the 12-18 inch range. I just hope it ain't more!

Ken,
Do you get an up slope effect there that increases your snow potential?
Just think what it must have been like a few million years back when the Appalachians were in the Mt. Everest category!
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Ken,

Just think what it must have been like a few million years back when the Appalachians were in the Mt. Everest category! This isn't scientific, but from living here for many snow seasons, here is my crazy observation. We generally get "lake effect snow" even though we are a long ways from the Great Lakes. The high and cold moisture comes southeast over the Great Lakes, past Pittsburgh where it drops its first load before going over some mountains (hills to the guys out west). Then it and drops it second load over the range that stretches from about Sunil's pond to Stubby Steve's place -- where they got over 40 inches of snow last October . Todd L., gets kind of a break, between high ridges. I'm between the ridges. If anything is left, it drops right where I live -- two miles east of here regularly gets nothing when we can get several inches of snow. But, because we live just west of the Blue Ridge, and just east of the the Potomac Highlands we also get the funneling effect of ocean storms that form off the Carolinas on their way north, right up the Shenandoah Valley. I still love it. It is beautiful, where we always get some snow storms. But, we have four distinct seasons, none of which are usually extreme. Not too cold. Not too hot. Not too snowy. Not to dry -- most of the time.

Ken,
Interesting. I actually miss the big snowstorms of New England since I moved from Massachusetts in 1971. To me it makes winter interesting and there was more to do there in winter like snow skiing.
Of course I was a kid then and didn't have to drive! LOL
Anybody here in the Midwest remember back in the 70's we used to get our biggest snowstorms around high school basketball sectional time in March?

I am not looking forward to Wednesday. I hope the rain snow line is far west and we get all rain where I work. Being a cop in a snow storm is about as crappy as it gets...

cecil you can have the snow. skiing is fun and I have to admit it's pretty out when we get a huge snow storm. but it's not worth the trouble of shoveling 3 ft of snow. + ive noticed your ponds are right out the front door i on the other hand have to walk down a long path on a steep hill but it builds character acording to my dad. when it comes to me it seems i walk up hill both ways

You would probably settle for desert rain,Dave. I hope you get some. It is a bad thing to watch your stuff dry up and die.
Two ponds, 13 and 15 acres on the Mattaponi River.

You still patrolling the southeastern section of Fairfax County? To me, that would be a crappy job as a cop on a good day. I can't imagine the headaches in bad weather, or even during a minor disaster of some kind -- let alone, everyday issues. It is good there are people like you who are willing to work those areas.
