My name is Shawn and I just purchased a property with 2 large ponds. One is 2 acres and the other is almost 6 acres. Joined to get some tips on keeping these healthy.
Thanks. I know a little about the history. The larger pond was dug about 10 years ago. Stocked with largemouth, crappie and bluegill. It ranges in depth from about 4' to 16'. The property was foreclosed so it was fished very hard while vacant. Also, the aerator pump was stolen so if anyone has a 3/4 hp, 10cfm Gast aerator pump they wanna let go of, please let me know.
I'm not sure. I was told that someone came and stole about 400 crappie and bluegill while the property was vacant. I ice fished it a couple of weeks ago and pulled about 40 bluegill out and only 2 crappie.
Do you guys think I need to shock this to get an idea as to what the numbers are?
I would fish it pretty much to see what you have. How big were your bluegill and croppie? Actually,I was talking about the shapes of your ponds. To me one looks like a bird and the other one resembles a mammal.
Two ponds, 13 and 15 acres on the Mattaponi River.
If you have the funds to shock it will tell you alot, if done correctly and save you alot of hard work/fishing and quess work.. Thank the guy for taking the crappie they'll be nothing but a pita.. You'll just have to get out and fish or shock to see what you need to do based in each fish body condition and sizes caught..
I believe in catch and release. I catch then release to the grease..
Wow, welcome and what an absolute dream property (IMO). Long driveway, secluded, 2 beautiful ponds. Would love to see more photos and it appears there are buildings or homes that are adjacent to the ponds?
Looks like a true wildlife habitat out there and I would guess that property could produce some pretty outstanding photos.
Ok, I'm in love with your property! wow!
Sorry for the minor hijack as all I can contribute so far is compliments and being awe-struck
Brier, the property is about 30 miles northeast of Cincinnati. Let me know if you have a contact in the area that does shocking, I'd like to at least see what the cost would be.
Lovnlivin, thanks for the compliment! I lucked into this place a month ago and bought it out of foreclosure.I am absolutely in love with it. There is a home with a nice barn by the small pond and a really cool lake house with a huge concrete pavilion at the big lake. The previous owner was the founder of a bank so I don't think money was an issue.
LOL! I know, I was over there yesterday. I have a friend who is updating the distribution maps of Ohio fish. He drives all over the state with a shock boat in tow. If he is close by sometime, I will see if he would spend a couple of hours. I have been out with him, it is a ton of fun.
