Here's a BBC post about a LMB caught west of Fort Worth in a guesstimated 1 to 2 acre pond on 01-21-13. The guy was from Tennessee, and didn't weigh the fish. It was returned to the pond. Dave, I may need to turn west on I30 instead of east from now on. potential state record?

Don't let BruceC see those pictures or he will be heading to TX for some fishing.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Al, I would like to sample that pond. Not for that girl but to look at water quality, forage base, etc. I would expect to see a shortage of big bluegill, 2 pound bass, etc. Would also like to see if it is annually stocked with tilapia.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Dave, George already has me digging on info about this fish. Pond, just from the pics posted, looked like a generic muddy banked farm pond. I've talked to guys that "transplanted" 10+ pound LMB in their ponds, but something above and beyond is being done there if that fish was grown from fry.

Just talked to the guy that caught this fish. Un-managed 2 acre pond, loaded with malnourished 2 to 4 pound bass.
Cannibalism? Are the several, yes I said several, extremely large LMB in this pond eating the smaller LMB? No forage has ever been added.

I can still hear Bruce's comment to me at PB V when I mentioned two, but only two, unusually large LMB that came from one of our ponds.........just one word. "Cannibals"
And, I happen to know that one of those fish was caught using an 8" LMB as bait.....accidentally.

I'd be that big if I folded it in half.

The biggest largemouth I've ever seen at the quarry blew up on a live bass I was reeling in.
When I drop an 8-inch bass off my dock that has been "disabled", it's not a pretty site.

One or two big LMB in an unmanaged pond is very common. One or two fish are able to jump the crowded slot and grow like crazy on their brothers , sisters and cousins etc plus anything else they find. Even more common when that pond tends to self drawdown (big water level fluctuations). In the end they get skinny and the pond becomes even more unbalanced.

That big drawdown pulls the numerous low Wr fish out of the shallow habitat and they become very vulnerable. Often times of extended drought also increase water clarity for awhile. Perfect conditions for Ms. Cannibal.

Running yearly totals for 2013: 32 pounds of LMB removed 1 beaver 16 pounds of tannerite used on 90% off Christmas ornaments. Gonna try to up my record keeping this year. Built a database for it.

Just do it...
