Make some friends up north and simply give ice fishing a try..... My ice is gone, but just about an hour north will prob be safe in a couple days again... Dude whose kid caught that trout in Texas...Awesome!! TJ are the yellow perch reproducing in that lake? Hey Nate, got some good friends up Norte but y'all gotta come come down here and fish with us....I hate ICE!!! I would NEVER walk on 8 inch ice - heck, I've walked on 8 FOOT ice and don't need three years to grow a one pound fish.. George

Tj..be careful, bud. Make sure you let us know you made it back.
I know some people on here are up by my dad's pond (north central/east IL, east of rockford, west of gurnee). Any updates on what ice survived the warmup is appreciated.
As far as the conversation of pro or anti ice...i ice fished a couple of times with the boyscouts as a kid, and never really understood it, loved spring &in summer fishing too much to just sit on a bucket and freeze.
Then, in my 20s i was introduced to chasing tip ups. On my dad's predator-heavy pond nothing beats the excitement of sprinting across the lake to wrestle a fish by hand. If you have northerly friends, i cant more highly recommend trying it at least once.
Concerning the promotion....yeah, its nice...but i left one department for 8 months or so, and then the company restructured, and i think theyve put me right back into my old job (i find out in a week or 2). I get to keep the pay raise, which is awesome, got the experience of being out of the corporate structure and into one of the smaller business units, and im back to the beginning.
Just when i thought i was out, they pull me back in.

I saw on the news that somebody ended up in the drink in lindenhurst, il yesterday. Fire recue got him out, he was only on 4 ft of water, and survived.
A) be careful, everyone. Lindenhurst is pretty far north of chicago, in an area traditionally known for reliably safe ice.
B) if there was enough ice to get him out to 4' of water, then next weekend should be a go. Yes, i understand i just used tragedy to justify my risk-taking....
I read the other day that a daily average of 23 degrees creates 0.38 inches (averaged from a statistically relevant sample of small waters) of ice on a 2" base layer each day. Does that sound accurate to anyone who keeps that kind of data from their pond?
Mike

One of our friends needs help to cull all Florida LMB under 10 (?) lbs....from his 11 acre lake - guess who? Oh - fly rods only and we don't fish with worms or live bait - never have - don't need to.. Lookin' forward to seein' some of you guys - been a long time since PB Conference I... G/

I'm back - poor day. Ice was 12" and clear, solid - but clarity was a mere 12-14". Raised several fish, couldn't get many to commit. Did notice a bunch of 2" gizzard shad frozen in the ice, so now I know why those crappie were so huge, and also why the fishing was tough. Abundant forage sometimes means a horrible bite.

At least you got out and made an effort TJ. I sat in the house and watched it rain/snow/sleet/rain most of the day. Ponds are high and muddy. Isn't it frustrating when they'll rise a few feet but still not commit!

Overcast here then it turned to sleet/freezing rain then finally snow. Ended up with about 1/2" on the ground. Pond is 60% ice free and the local lake is covered with rotten black ice.
Almost 60°F yesterday, barely got a few degrees above freezing today.

Yeah, frustrating - especially since I know what size of fish exist in the lake. Oh well...I'm fortunate to even get out - sounds like everyone East of IA has no ice to speak of, even JKB in Michigan. I don't recall a year like that, ever...and I thought last Winter was too warm. We're lucky to have the ice.

Wowza, good job BGK! Impressive fish, especially considering the conditions in which they were caught - he's almost 11"!
