I don't recall ever hearing of so many guys going through this early in the season, at least here in Indiana. I've ice fished for a long time, but my ice this year just looks strange....I'm not sure how to explain it.

Yeah sight fishing is both informational, as well as maddeningly frustrating. I'll be so engrossed in trying to tempt that fish that I find myself holding my breath. It's quite the learning experience, in regards to presentation tactics and the ability of a BG to suck in your bait and spit it back out in a nanosecond.....

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

Last year was unique in the way that the ice was only safe for such a short time. I think people are so anxious this year because we feel last year was such a waste, maybe they’re a little overly apprehensive and not considering safety as much as they should.

Pike steaks?

Dwight, tell me more about that pike....how big, age estimate....

I took 17 guys guided ice fishing today and they all went home with 5 gallon buckets full of fish....it was 50 degrees and the fish were on fire...the ice was only safe till noon and then we got off and feasted on tuna, elk, venison, snapper, and brats!!

Looks like everybody had a blast.

I don't know if I'd trust the ice around here. I've only seen one person on the ice at the local lake, and the main body of water there still hasn't froze.

Yesterday morning's local news reports were grim. Two young gentlemen drowned after the ice they were on gave way. Cries for help were heard, and responded to, but it was too late frown

Another gal in a different situation was rescued after an hour in the frigid waters. She was holding onto a chunk of ice, and the Fire Department was able to break thru in one of their crafts and pluck her out. Really Cool!!!

We have "NO" safe Ice, at all, around here!

JKB.... That's terrible. Being from Dallas I don't know diddly about ice fishing, but if those two young men would have had those emergency ice spikes would they have most likely have made it out alive?

Cant believe you live so close N8 and have that kind of ice? My ice has been crap from the beginning.. I did manage to walk out and take my Texas Hunters down i got from you (doing a little modifying). Just going out to them was very scary and i stuck my fingers through the ice where their poles are prolly 3-4 but it was cracking and making a racket so i scooted off quickly *puckered*

I believe in catch and release. I catch then release to the grease..

Popping ice is the sign of quality ice. I know what you mean though, it's hard to get used to. As long as it's clear, you're safe on 3". Fished on less than 2, won't do it again, though.

Hey nate, what county were you in? I'm thinking of going up to the rent's place next weekend, northern illinois between rockford and the chi suburbs.

I know it is obviously not safe right now, but they have some seriously cold nights and below freezing days between now and then.

In your sage opinion, think it will be safe?

Thanks
Skinny

The fish would stay out of trouble if it could just keep its fool mouth shut.
Turns out there is a lot I should be learning from the fish.

OK, bear with me with on this.

How do you Northern guys deal with ice transitions when relating to fishing? Can you fish during limited ice, or does the solid ice mean it's time to go fishing? I have to admit I really never thought about it until all the ice fishing posts started coming in. It seems like right now is a great time for you all, and I was just curious.

I can see where having 4 or 5 feet of thin ice around the bank would make fishing difficult at best.

Once you have full ice, you can theoretically fish anywhere on your pond similar to using a boat on open water. So you can take the time to locate the fish.

In partial ice-over situations, you might not be able to get to where the fish are....
