I had numerous algae blooms all summer with my pond turning greenish. But now here in Michigan it has turned colder and we have had some ice forming. I can now see a fair amount of algae forming in the shallow depths of water. Is there anything I can do to deter growth at this point or do I have to wait until spring and warmer 60 degree or so water to treat? Not fair to have algae growing even in colder weather!!!

Don't worry about it. Like ewest, I think it's a type of cold water FA. It will die off once the water warms up, and if there's sun, it will provide O2 for the fish. (downside is that it removes O2 at night or when there's heavy cloud or snow cover)

I have that here in northern Indiana too, but it shouldn't be too severe in really cold water vs. just cool water. That is, it shouldn't grow excessively fast in water that is in the 30's. An upside is it does produce oxygen as long as you can get light to the algae.

My water is so hard I've never been able to treat my algae with anything that really works. Besides this is not the time you'd want to kill plants before ice cover. You could create an oxygen problem.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

OK thanks for the replies. It isnt excessive but just curious about it. It is definitely FA as I can kinda rake some of it but slithers through the rake teeth. I do have winter aeration but just run my shallow one to keep the ice open on that end. Didnt know of any algaecide that worked in this cold of water, just wanted some opinions.
