Spkplg - Well done. PETA won't like you, but I say let PETA people keep these rat types in their houses/backyards. Then we will see how well they like these fuzzy, cuddly varmits.

Indeed there are. I scouted the rest of my ponds and didn't see any more signs, or activity....but my BIL's lake is just below ours, as in 100 yards or so, and when I walked its shoreline I saw several active runs. So, as a matter of self-preservation, I'll make a few more sets down there this weekend.

Sprkplug, do you use a bait on your traps?

I have these pesky varmits as well but was hoping the mink would control them, yet I still seeing them swimming around in the pond. When I have my gun in hand they're no where to be found. No gun, I see them swimming or near the shore frown

I have 3 of the 110 traps but hesitated to use them due to seeing the mink, but I think it's time they meet their maker!

No bait...just set the trap in the run, so the rat' has to swim through it to enter or leave the den.

I've had my best luck shooting them in the evening, when they are returning to the den.

Thanks for the reply!

I've had to try the "floating" trap due to inaccessability but haven't had any luck. I wish I COULD just set the trap in the run frown

From now on the gun stays at the pond so I too can say "Let me introduce you to the instrument of your demise..."

smile

Talking about rat's. Been meaning to ask what people thought about this situation with EPDM lined pond's.

Saw one a couple months ago swimming in the pond out back. Held water pretty good during the summer. The pond to the NE, which is larger, and also lined, was dismal to say the least.

Think they would mess up the liner?

I'll bet they could, but I don't know as to what extent. Don't think I would want to take the chance, though.....

Nice! Sparkplug..Do you have to remove them every year? I remove 2-3 rats every year usually with a .22. They seem to be a forever renewable resource around my ponds. I love the finalitly and the no question of the outcome with Conibears. Although, setting them still makes me jumpy. Not very experienced yet.

Yes, I find them to be a perpetual nuisance, although some years' are worse than others. I shot a few myself earlier this year, so I'm up to 7 as of right now, and I know I'll take a few more from the lower lake. Gonna' set it this weekend.

Got 2 more off the island this morning. The water gets deep pretty quick down there, so I had to use a few pole sets... A "reach set", as my Grandad used to say.

Awesome, muskrat fur is selling for a bit more money lately. You just tossing them or you gonna process the fur?

I don't have any stretchers these days, so I'm giving them away to a fellow who does. Still thinking I may skin out a young one, but just to eat.... not sell.
