25 degrees here this morning, skim ice in the shallows. Managed a few HBG, with this guy taking BFOD honors @ 21 ozs.

Hmmm.

I'm thinking fish rustling! grin

I sure get anxious and jealous when I see those great fish!

We've watched what Bruce Condello did by selective breeding and keeping lots of records. We've watched what Cecil has done to grow obese fish, like going as far as letting his fish spend cold winter days in the house, just like his favorite dog.

But, as far as I can tell, you are growing these trophies from generic stock, under un-special circumstances, with readily available food.

An article about how you've done this would be great.

Thanks everyone.....I have a high regard for Bruce, Cecil, and Bill Cody's talents. As a matter of fact, it was a collaboration of their efforts, in the form of a three part article about growing behemoth Bluegills, that got me started thinking about raising my own. Those articles were published in PondBoss back in 2006, and I highly recommend that anyone considering trying their hand at growing trophy Gills' should have those issues in their library.

It's true that the article under discussion dealt with native, rather than HBG, but I feel that many of the fundamentals are the same. And while I have made a few changes that may seem contrary to widely accepted practices, that should not infer any wisdom on my part, rather it might reflect what I have come to believe: Raising HBG requires a different way of looking at things....at the very least it may require modifications to some commonly held ideas.

So while I may have tweaked and experimented with a few things, I think there are two factors which account for the majority of my success with these fish.. The work of truely talented individuals like the three authors mentioned above, and the attributes of the fish themselves....I still maintain that HBG are one of the easiest, most foolproof fish to raise. All I had to do was develop the correct mindset.

By the way, I feed AQ500 once a day, temps permitting.

JHAP got smacked down once too often, and now knows his place! We've dismantled the GSF Federation and will no longer tolerate any mention of praise for the loathesome GSF. We will have to make an exception in your case, Tony - because the hideous GSF traits are graced with the beautiful, superior presence of BG genetics. wink grin laugh

My place is with my steel toed boot planted firmly in your posterior.

Do not get uppity young man. I'm old and wily and not afraid to teach you some manners.

The GSF Federation was a shell entity that we allowed you to dismantle.

Did you not wonder why it was called the Green Sun Fish Federation and not the Green Sun Fish Association that you dismantled?

Did you not wonder why the magazines you found on the receptionist's desk were Pawn'd Boss and not Pond Boss? You are too easily fooled my friend. The GSA is alive and well.

You people are finally beginning to realize the truth. GSF are the most beautiful, perfect sunfish in the known universe. Mixing them with mongrel BG is appropriate - anything to improve the lowly BG is readily accepted.

Sooner or later all sunfish on the planet will contain GSF dna and we will have won.

Resistance is futile.

Your sunfish will be assimilated.

We have spoken.

Somehow, this actually seems quite plausible.......

Good to see you back Jeff.

Have you placed a GSF cookie on PB?

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

No, it takes a long time to get the icing correct on a GSF cookie and when I'm done I invariably eat them.

Oh, you mean the computer type of cookie, nope to that as well - - I'm just not that tech handy. I have low paid minions that watch the forums for me and they are paid with .... you guessed it.... GSF cookies.

Why is it that tech names mimic other names... Cookies that aren't cookies. Spiders that are spiders. Webs that... well you see where I'm going with this.

The person? (Alvah C. Roebuck co founder of Sears, Roebuck and Company).

The place? (Roebuck, South Carolina)

or the thing? (Roebuck, a male Roe Deer).

Surely you can't be serious (and yes I called you Shirley).

Oh and speaking of serious, what ever happened to the RES thread... dang I liked that thread.

JHAP -- I believe it may have been some longtime PB members who burglarized your place just so they could encourage you to move from lurking in the toolies, to again becoming a deranged regular forum member. crazy

We've missed you!

Also, please give Rikki a big hug from all of us.
