Am I the only person who has to wear a hard had to check the ponds and chickens this season? I've never before seen so many acorns coming out of the trees. I guess it has to do with such a wet and mild summer -- even though the old timers say it is an indication of a very tough winter to come. We'll see. The deer, turkey, and squirrels should have more than they can possibly eat. This is what our flower beds look like: I blew our rear deck off last night, and it was clean. This is what it looked like about noon time today" And, this is what the "gravel" looks like in my driveway: Our house and my tractor barn have steel roofs. It constantly sounds like somebody is shooting at us, whether inside or outside.

When trees get stressed, like from unusual weather, they will produce a lot of seeds. They think they might die and send forth little ones to go into the world to repopulate.

LMAO!
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I haven't checked the acorn situation out this year. A few years ago, like you Ken, ya needed a hard hat to walk out back. The following winter was especially nasty.
I am looking for reliable info on winter weather this year to determine whether or not to move back to the boonies next month or wait till spring. Kinda sucks living here!

This thread reminds me to get to collecting acorns. There's a larvae of a nut weevil that inhabits some of them. Makes a heck of an ice fishing bait.

Same nuttiness by us, but it's a bit more mass. The walnuts are dangerous enough, but nowhere near as plentiful as the shagbark hickories. When it starts raining hickory nuts, put on your helmet and move the vehicles. Then, when it rains pretty hard, the rolling water gathers the empty shells and sends them in nut-laden waves down the boat launch road toward the pond.

It was dry and hot here, and the acorns are in short supply. I think the wildlife will be pretty hungry this winter!

I went out tonight to gather acorns, and found some trees bare while others had a decent crop in spite of the drought. Hickory nuts on the other hand, are nearly non-existent. And the trees I located that did produce nuts had been cleaned out by the squirrels. Which, by the way, is an excellent indicator of whether or not a hickory tree is producing "good" nuts, or worm infested ones...

I've got a good crop of acorns on almost of the mature trees but they are much smaller than yours so don't hurt when they hit you in the head!

Lots of acorns and hickory nuts, black walnut harvest is kinda thin.

Bumper crop of live oak acorns. Avg red oak as far as I can tell. Iffy on the white oaks. Avg on hickory nuts.

We are having wind gusts this morning. With our house's metal roof, it sounds like we are under attack from an army of angry squirrels.

We have a moderate crop this year.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

As a kid we used to pick the acorns from my parents pin oak tree and see how many "worms" we called them, we could find. Never gave them thought to use for bait. May have to try that this year, although I do not get to ice fish, or at least I will not walk out on lakes in Oklahoma that are frozen.

Just got back from my deer stand trimming a few branches the whole floor of the stand is covered with acorns.. Let this be a sign of huge deer this season..
Probably not but I get superstitious around deer season lol

Heard a few blasts this evening while I was feeding, sounded like a muzzleloader. Somebody sighting in I suspect. Pretty close too.

That's a lot of white oak acorns Ken!
Our land in PA has a huge crop of chestnut/rock oak acorns and a moderate crop of white oak acorns. The red oak acorns are absent this year as I expected them to be. There was a late freeze last spring that did them in. White oak species take 1 year for their acorns to mature, red oak species take 2 years. So if you get a late freeze one year, that fall you'll usually see no white oak acorns, but the red oaks may be fine as their acorns for that fall started grown the spring before. Many trees are cyclical, producing a bumper crop every few years. Sometimes stress can increase the crop... Maybe nature's last ditch effort if the mother tree dies?

Travis -- we've got so many dropping, I don't dare look up to see what trees they are coming from. I suspect most are chestnut and red oaks. The hickories are dropping more than just a few hurting projectiles too.

We just put our new driveway in through our woods. the hickory nuts kept bombing the cement and making craters in it. We had to keep going over it and still will have some divots when it is finished.

Our moderate acorn crop will probably affect this weekends start of bow season. In 2010 we had a massive acorn crop and deer didn't move. It was the worst hunting season on record and I saw only 5 deer all season. Last year was hot, really hot, and I saw more deer opening day than I had all of the previous year. I recall that number was 17 on the first day.
The rut hasn't started yet. I have a pic of a couple of large bucks still running together. It ought to be soon.

:-) The Wife and I were walking down to the pond yesterday and were bombarded by the hickory. That's after a barrage from the beech about a month ago and the walnuts in the grove are spewing green bombs that will snap your ankle. The dock is covered with acorns and needs to be swept daily. A bumper crop of squirrels and deer.
Ahhhhhh......nature, gotta love her.

I noticed a pretty darn good crop of acorns here too when hanging a couple of stands last weekend - hoping the bucks will be in the timber next week when bow season opens - odds are pretty good I'd bet given that most of the corn has already been harvested around these parts.
