Hello all!

I'm new from North Carolina (north central). My uncle has a pond that is 4 - 4.5 acres roughly 10' deep at it's deepest. In the shady corners we have a lot of hair algae. We've asked locally how to remove it and they've all suggested using Black Pond Dye. From what I've read that will not get rid of the aglae and will put stress on the fish (LMB, Crappie, and Bluegill). The other option I have found is Barley Straw and good bacteria. The question is, might this be the least expensive and good riddance to this algae? I know he stocked carpe when he first purchased the property. They are now over two feet in length, it's about 5 total.

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Jason

Nothing in your post will get rid of filamentous Algae.. You'll eitherhave to use chemicals or mechanical removal (trash pump or rake it out)

I believe in catch and release. I catch then release to the grease..

Thank you Bluegillerkiller. Should we use algaecide in conjunction with a dye? I've found Pond Logic® Pond Dye Black DyeMond, will this work alone? If we apply to one corner every couple of weeks, until the entire pond is treated, will we need to worry with a fish kill?

Thanks,

Jason

I don't think it'll work.. But I'm sure there's someone on here who is alot more knowledgable than me on algaecide/herbicide/dye

JM,
Check out a product called BioCycle. This is a stressless application of dye and barley.

Now that the season is starting to change into Fall, should we bother with algae prevention / removal?
