I was at Basspro yesterday and noticed this spoton the fish as you can see here. It was on a good amount of the fish in their tank, but this is by far the worst one that I saw.

It's somewhat of a mystery but it's referred to in some circles as "Black Blotch Syndrome." No one has indicated it's s disease but it may be a result of excessive handling and poor water conditions. Nothing conclusive.

Personally I've always thought if it as some kind of birthmark or congenital thing as I've seen it on a few fish. Or perhaps akin to a scar?

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Could be skin cancer, melanoma. Extreme UV flashes from the sun are on the upswing with solar maximum approaching next year. Here is an article I stumbled across yesterday.

Fish getting skin cancer from UV radiation, scientists say. LA Times Aug 2, 2012

Quote:
Scientists from the Australian Institute of Marine Science were near the Great Barrier Reef conducting a survey of shark prey, predominantly coral trout. They kept seeing strange dark patches on the normally bright orange fish, and for help they turned to another research team from the University of Newcastle in England that was studying coral disease in the area.

Quote:
Sweet and his colleagues cut the fish tissue into slices and put them under a microscope. "We basically stumbled onto these tumor formations," he said. Then they compared them with samples from fish that had been given melanoma — the most dangerous type of skin cancer — as part of a laboratory experiment. They looked nearly identical.

The findings were published online Wednesday by the journal PLoS One.

Quote:
Aside from their skin lesions, the fish that were captured by researchers did not show any signs of illness. But Nancy Knowlton, a marine ecologist at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, said it remained possible that a significant number of fish were becoming sick from the cancer.

"Once the melanoma gets invasive, the fish probably get compromised," making them more vulnerable to sharks, said Knowlton, who was not involved in the study. "Somebody with advanced melanoma is being taken care of by doctors and loved ones, but fish will be eliminated fairly quickly."

Well now that's a lot of good info very quick.

I was completely shocked at the amount of fish that had it at BP. If I remember correctly, it was only the LMB that it was on. They have Stripers, big cats (I can't identify catfish), YP, Bluegills and even SMB in their aquarium.

I feel like the staff that takes care of it has to know about it, but it almsot makes you feel like telling someone. Almost all of these fish are "trophy" sized for Maryland...

Lukkyseven,

I have the email contact info for the woman that is the head of all the show tanks for all the BPS stores. If you want to email her she may be able to answer your questions.

Let me know if you're interested and I will PM it to you.

On a side note speaking of cancer I once read that sharks are immune to any kind of cancer. Not sure if it's true though.

At least with people the risks factors associated melanoma are:

Fair skin.
A history of sunburn.
Excessive ultraviolet (UV) light exposure.
Living closer to the equator or at a higher elevation.
Having many moles or unusual moles.
A family history of melanoma.
Weakened immune system.

Would one consider LMB to have "fair skin" relative to other fish? Can fish get sunburned?

To me is appears that melanoma risks come from both genetic and environmental factors.

some pretty interesting stuff!
cecil.. sharks have been tested quite a bit to find out why they appear to be "immune" to cancer.. hopefully these studies will produce some results

Lukkyseven, this makes me wonder if the BPS tank has a UV clarifier sitting right next to the tank? You could easily have some skin damage from handling the fish and if you added in a constant artificial source of high UV light, then the "fair skinned" fish might develop blothchy spots.

I also wonder if the immune system in some fish can prevent the surface "melanomas" from spreading, something simlar to sharks? This comment was interesting.
