Hi folks!! Been digging around the internet for ideas on my newest venture, building/digging a pond. It seems I keep coming back to this site because it holds more information and knowledge than I can find anywhere else...with that, i wanted to be a member. I am looking to move within the next year or two (just a bit northeast of where I am)...but am going to purchase the land, hopefully, withing the next couple months. I've pretty much settled on a 24 acre track of land that is divided into 9.68 acre, 5 acre, and 9 acre pieces... I would like to get it all, but will be happy with the first 9.68... either way, I will clear out about 3 acres of it for a homesite and pond (currently all wooded). I was thinking about building a 1-2 acre pond to stock. Originally I wanted it for bass and socalet (crappie)...but after reading a little on here, it seems crappie is not a good route...so i guess it will be bass and perch (coppernose, bluegill,??)... anyhow, I have been looking for some inspiration on the design and depth mostly... i don't care to have a common square, oval or circle pond... would rather the pond have some fingers/sloughs on the far ends dipping into the woods a bit for character and also seclusion for wild game to access...just a thought... Glad to be here!!

Sounds like a great plan. You might also want to do some sculpturing of the bottom. And maybe a finger or 2 going out into the water.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

that does sound good... I drew up a little sketch of one idea i had... its deepest soundings of 15' were held in two different spots...I placed two flats on opposite sides of the pond (1'-3" in depth and 25'x20' in surface) with one having a gradual taper and the other having a steep drop to 8 then another drop to 15... I figured having more elevation changes and added structure would be ideal for different weather patterns in a pond just to give the fish options.
I hate getting so far ahead of myself on things like this but figured it would be better to have a good plan that I can change as I go rather than not having a plan and making big mistakes... going back out to the property tomorrow to take another peak

Exciting to have a clean slate and get to do whatever you want. I love hearing you're going to be creative with it. Can't wait to see pictures of dirt being displaced!

This is going to be a really fun venture... I love designing things and making them come to life.. I do metal work as a side job building boats, boiling pots, tanks, etc... and always love to see them operate after complete.. I am sure I will be the same when it comes to all the different angles this task presents... Being this land I am looking to purchase holds a bunch of deer (and backs up to about 20,000 acres of deer hunting land) I was thinking about incorperating a shallow canal (2'-3' deep) off the back side of the pond that would run into the woods a piece... that way I can take a pond boat with trolling motor and sneak in and out of my stands pretty quietly... just a thought... I'll keep yall updated on progress as it goes along.
