Yep! An ultra light spinning rod, a casting bubble, and a black gnat fly, the most efficient way to fly fish! grin

We were dragging Rapala D-10 cranks in 8ish to 10ish feet of water, bumping the bottom hard. The fish would just obliterate the crank when they hit it! The fights were amazing. The technique was harder than it looked however, as the boat operator need an exquisite knowledge of the bottom contour, and the associated snags and hangups.

I too, am a devotee of using flies with spinning gear. I love the slow fall, (sink rate) of a wet fly presentation made with a fly rod, but don't usually have room for a backcast.

I've been experimenting with popular wet fly patterns emulated on 1/80oz or 1/100oz jigheads with foam bodies. The weight allows for a decent cast without the need for a casting float, while the foam bodies slow the sink rate through the water column. Still looking for that killer combo for big BG's, but I am seeing very promising results.

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

Caught a nice GillCracker today, using an ice-fishing jig below a slip float. Not a big fish at 9", but it was one of many that fell to this setup.

From what I can see, still not enough room for some of the places I fish. And, when you're straddling a multiflora rose bush, or a brush pile, I think several coils of line at my feet would not help my blood pressure any....

I've got my casting distance up to around 30' with this setup, and the fly/jigs I'm making still sink slow enough to entice a fish or two.....

Sparkplug,

Hey - I've done it that way in tight situations for many years too. Especially with small poppers.

So, what are those fish? What the heck is a "GillCracker"?

Nine inches for any sunfish is more than respectable -- and delicious!

Ken

Sorry Ken... Gillcracker is slang for a RES x BG hybrid.

The handle is 11-1/2", the other SMB I caught earlier was right at 10".

Back in late October of last year I put twenty SMB in the pond, all of them were 5-6" with one 8-9" fish in the batch. It looks like they are growing well on fathead minnows. smile

I figured Omaha would comment on the Drum he seems to be one of the few that care about these fish. As they are much fun to catch and with the size in the pic are pretty tasty.

Omaha, what would you consider as prepared correctly?
