just been reading some of your posts about stocking and I want your ideas on my plan.
My wife and I recently bought a home in NW Ohio and it has a small .25, or slightly less, acre pond that is 18' deep at the deepest point.
Our plan is to raise big sunfish in this pond, and right now it has some decent sized BG's and at least one YP I've seen. Also have caught about 6 LMB's of which the biggest was about 13-14" in length. Also spied on grass carp lurking when the water started to warm but haven't seen him since, and he's about 2 foot or so. I see quite a few small BG's in the 1-3" range and also a few fingerling LMB's in the 2-5" size range.
I've added 20 new bluegills in the 5-7" range to the pond to get some new blood introduced to the existing 'gills. Planning on also putting in about 10 RES and 10 Hybrid BG's as well. After the bluegills spawn a couple times I'd like to add half-a-dozen larger - 8-10" LMBs to keep them in check.
Does this sound like a reasonable strategy?
The pond, as of right now, has very little cover for YOY fish. I've put in three small brushpiles and a bigger LMB as taken control of one of those. Another one holds a lot of small BG's and the remnants of the fatheads that I put in earlier this year.
All advice is welcome.
Thanks and good fishing,
Dan

I think you should add a single sex of LMB.

The plan sounds reasonable for your goal. Feeding the BG would help.

What do you mean a single sex? All males or all females? Can you get them from a hatchery?
Thanks,

Why single sex lmb? Wouldn't he want them to reproduce to keep the BG in check, He wants to raise big sunfish so wouldn't he want high #'s of small bass?

I believe in catch and release. I catch then release to the grease..

BG. CSBG. LMB. HSB. RES.

I missed that part. I just saw the pond was .25 acres and thought the bass numbers would easily overcrowd the BG population and nearly wipe it out then he would be left with a stunted bass pond.

That can happen absent proper mgt. LMB only ponds are not uncommon up north with no mgt.

Bing,
There is no particular purpose to adding hybrid BG's, other than a little diversity in the pond.
Why do you ask?
Thanks,
Dan
