Hello all,

I have 40 acres in south eastern Kansas and just found out that the pond I am having built (after test holes) will only be 7-8 foot deep. Is this deep enough for my area for a fishing pond?

The pond will be approximately 1 acre surface area. The builder has built a lot of ponds in my area and I asked if it would be worth it, and said he would like it to be deeper (he hit shale at that depth) but it would make a nice fishing pond.

If only that deep, be prepared to positively add an aeration system for the winter, and make sure the diffuser is in 3'-4' of water for the winter. 7'-8' is marginal for winter depth, if the pond loses 2' of water and you have a hard winter, you might lose the fish.

If there is clay in the area, the pond could be deeper, and the clay put in the bottom of the pond, and compacted with a sheepsfoot roller. If clay was available and the contractor could dig the pond deeper byremoving the shale, then I'd go that route and make sure that 24" of clay lined the bottom/sides of the pond all the way to just above the proposed water level.
