With last night's rains, the pond is nearly full!
http://s1263.photobucket.com/albums/ii635/Dnorm11/

It's somewhere in the neighborhood of 1 1/2 acres to 2 acres. The goal is to provide fun bass fishing with a bent toward growing some larger bass through management. I would not go so far as to say trophy bass pond. It will be fertilized.

Here's my thoughts on how we stock this thing, assuming it is closer to 2 acres:

12-15 lbs fathead minnows
2000-4000 CNBG
1000 Redear
100 LMB

Questions:

I know the CNBG rate is beyond the recommended norm. The thought is to provide an excellent forage base.

Should I hold off until next spring on the LMB and stock larger 3-4" fish?

I'm tempted to get some Camelot Bell 2-3" LMB and put them in this year. Would you mix this with 25% Native or Florida?

All comments appreciated!

Dnorm, I hope that one of the experts jumps in soon to help you on your stocking question. My new .75 acre lake is 60% full. I'm thinking of a similar combo of BG fry and fatheads this spring, and also wondering when I should stock the LMB.

Looks good to me and a lot of people are now recommending 2K BG/CNBG for a new pond. That may be more redears than necessary but I doubt that they would be a problem.I know nothing about the Camelot Bell's.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

General rule is Southern waters can wait a bit longer (i.e. 2nd year) to stock LMB, Northern waters LMB should be stocked the same time as BG (same sized fish). But, if you want fat, fast growing LMB, and not large BG in the pond, I'd be really tempted to defer stocking a Northern pond with LMB until year 2 as well. It all depends on your goals for the pond, and fingerling stocking rates.

Dnorm, WHO are you getting your fish from?

IT DOES MATTER.

Yep. Thinking either Tyler Fish Farms, Overton Fisheries or maybe PondKing if I choose to put in larger bass next year.

I have fish from both Tyler Fish Farms and Overton Fisheries, and both have been great to deal with, and fish arrive in very good shape.
