Folks,
I'm seeing alot of this weed around the shorelines of my pond which I've never seen before. It floats so the wind pushes it around to the edges of the pond. I've checked the TAMU plant identification site and cannot find it under "floating plants."

The first file has a few of the weeds shown out of the water and the second shows them floating in the water with some fancy blue circles (hehe).

Thanks,
Dan

Do you have ducks , geese or muskrats ? Looks like pulled up plants floating in FA.

No, none of those. I agree they look like uprooted plants because they are half root and half stalks. There is some FA starting to cling to the weeds as you noted.

My pond is only one acre but these plants are about half way around the pond on the shoreline. It would take alot of ducks, etc. to uproot that many plants.

Thanks,

Eleocharis baldwinii (aka "road-grass" or "slender spikerush", though debated HERE )

It seems that road-grass is a rooted to the bottom of the pond. Is it normal that I have so many that have been uprooted? Is Ewest correct that some animal is uprooting?

Also, the thread did not answer the best control options and I could not find any control measures doing internet searches other than triploid carp. (Note that I have one carp in the pond). What would be the best control?

Thanks,

The link indicates that Reward or a floridine based (Sonar, Avast, or Whitecap) chemical are all "good" for spikerush.

Those all are relatively expensive ($150 is minimum for smallest containers) so, of course, I don't want to buy the wrong stuff.

One site I read indicated that flurodine is not recommended for treating small areas (i.e. "spot" treating) which is what I'd like to do. Does anyone have advice?

thanks,

The reason why it's not recommended to spot treat is that the ppm needs to be at or above a certain level for "X" amount of days. If spot treating, it's impossible to keep water movement from happening, so the ppm will drop below target levels in the treated area.

Would the Reward (diquat) be effective as a spot treatment?

How about a glysophate based herbicide?

Thanks,

Ewest,
I found this post from you from August, 2011 when discussing killing spikerush when Kellie suggested CLEARCAST.

"I used it on spikerush with a surfactant this May and it looks dead , dead , dead. I will take a pic and post it soon. "

Two Questions:
1) Were you talking about the slender spikerush(road-grass?) I'm inquiring about here?
2) What surfactant did you add?

Thanks,
