Don't waste your time mixing. I've done it a couple times, the small stuff works fine. I thought about just feeding the bigger hoping maybe less small fish would eat the bigger pellets. If they get a taste and like it they'll choke trying o swallow it they like it so much..

Mixed food sizes lets all sizes of fish feed. That is why GFC is made in all sizes. All sizes works fine. 600 is bigger than 500. My feeders don't throw that much in 1 second. None of the directional pond feeders I have seen (Aqua Pro , Sweeney and TH ) throw that much in 1 second. Pellet size should be 20% of the fish's gape. BG from 4-5 inches up can easily eat 600. Under 4 inches can eat 500 better.

hello, I'm fixin, to buy a fish feeder. I've been looking at the brands advertised in the PondBoss Mag. Would either of you have any feedback/advice to give a newbee on which on is the best choice?

The most highly recommended fish feeder is the Texas Hunter one but has a high price. In this case, you get what you pay for from what I have read. Others who own them can speak more in depth about them and tell you the pros and cons.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I am using a Remington deer corn feeder actually for feeding. I throws feed in a 360 though so I will make a back plate for it so it don't go backwards towards the shore. It's a 30 gallon tank. Going to see how it works. It has 3 speeds and 4 timer settings. It cost me 85 bucks. So we'll see how it does. It does great with corn. thanks,

kegger, I have Stren Aqua Pro directional feeders, and at the time they were about $125 less than TH feeders. I've worked on TH feeders and used them. For the price difference, TH is the way to go in my book. Throws the feed far, no problems with jamming, will throw different sizes of food equally well, which the AquaPro won't. I haven't used Sweeney feeders or others, so I'll let others that have experience with them chime in.

There are many more options (types of feeders / converted deer feeders ect) now than in the past. I can't speak to any of those. Of the 3 directional feeders I mentioned all are good. You do get what you pay for ! # of threads on here with good discussions of the choices.

I think it will depend on how much you plan to feed and what size pond you are feeding. Do you live on the pond or near it to make sure no one takes the feeder?
I would have loved to had a TH feeder, but with cattle, thieves, etc. I went with a Moultrie bucket feeder. It will be going on its third year now if it still works come spring time. I have had to fix the plate one time but other than that it has been pretty good for the price.
If we ever happen to move out there, or I come into some money I may buy a better feeder, but for now it seems to do the job. The only problem is I have to fill it up about every 3-5 days and that can be a pain if you have to drive far to get to it. But gives me a reason to drive over there and check things out.

No I don't live on the pond. I live about 90 miles away for now. But my feeder is chest high out in the water. Not on my dock. It a 85 dollar deer feeder it holds about 200 pounds of corn so I bet it will do the same for fish food. So if I want I could set it up for weeks. This feed on high can throw corn a good 15 feet with a good battery. So I am excited to see how it works for fish food.
thx

Sometime those deer feeders won't do aswell with 500, it has no door to stop the food from feeding and relies on the food arcing/clogging while off. 500 could run out of it like sand until empty, so test before you get over water..

I use the texas hunter directional feeders off my docks to feed my larger fish, I also have 6 of these texas hunter scatter feeders with 8' legs around my lake in 5' of water and filled them with smaller sized feed. Texas Hunter Trophy Feeder Anyhow, I have found that in larger bodies of water it is very important to feed the small fish! All the rage lately is bigger nuggets, but with longterm fish programs, feeding small fish is very wise!

I have Aqua Pro and Texas Hunter - go TH no worries, worth the additional $ unless you like tinkering, repairing, mailing, waiting, frustration, while your fish go hungry. Better construction, design, timer, performance, etc.
Mix pellets per Eric/Scott. AM 500/600. Great strategy and provides opportunity to all size classes of fish. Suggest buying several bags at once to save hassle for later in the year. I just sent my order in for 5 bags ea of 500/600/LM. I won't have to mess with it again until next Spring as delivery/pickup can be a pain to coordinate/plan and upfront cost is worth it to me as I'm always in a hurry and it's hard to find time. I store my feed in rubbermaid plastic tubs with locking lids that can hold 2.5 bags each to keep mice out.
Just my $.02!

What a great idea Nate - I never thought of that...and these are far less $ than directional feeder. Too cool. Can you share some photos/videos? I know you have them....

I found that with my AquaPro directional feeder, that if I feed straight AM500, set one second, it'll throw about 2# of food. If using AM600, it's about 1/2# of food, and it is now saying "jam" on the display if set for more than 2 seconds.
As soon as it gets warmer out, I'm going to have to take it apart and try to diagnose the problem.
If the AM600 is slightly on the large size, the pellets want to bridge over and not dispense. TH has none of those problems.

George, remind me again after it gets warmer out and I have the feeder fixed. Right now it won't throw food more than 1 second - the feed comes out so fast that the machine starts to clog up and the feeder thinks it's getting a jam and stops.
From seeing what it throws on low settings, I'd say A LOT. If I had to guess, I'd say in excess of 3#.
2 seconds throws more AM600 than 100# of RBT can clean up in one sitting.

Texas Hunter feeder Scott - not AquaPro... When the the TH feeders first came out, I recall someone ran a 10 second AQMX 600 test, using a plastic bag over discharge chute and got an accurate weight number Maybe someone can recall the TH 10 second AQMX 600 weight - I would just be guessing.

esshup, Thanks for the tip- I'm going with the TH. By the way I just stocked my new pond with 40 lbs of shinners and 30 lbs of fatheads this past weekend (a great day). I have to admit, I didn't know it would make me so happy to release all those little guys. I got them from Jones fish in OH, and it took about an hour to get them home. I was shocked to find that out of all those fish, I only lost 4! Anyway, It was a great day! I'll be stocking BG on the 28th, and LMB later- June time frame.
Thanks again

Now Scott you know we always beat Texas Hunter direct prices for PondBoss members. Their price is $768 with solar panel for 125. We drop price to $718 for our friends who support the magazine. The $50 savings can buy you some good fish.
I don't like the feeders in the water due to pain in loading food in the boat but it is a great idea if putting in the effort. The other things to consider is placement on points to maximize usage. The directional feeders really chunk the food so position with predominant wind. This will allow the food to cover a large area.
