I have a 1/4 acre pond with Blues and Channels stocked last fall. Recently I added 3 Mallard Ducks and 2 Pekin Ducks for my kids to enjoy. I've noticed that as soon as my Straight Shooter feeder releases the floating pellets my ducks eat most of it before my catfish can get to it. What do you guys reccommend? I've thought about mixing sinking pellets with Floating in order to feed both ducks and fish.

Please let me know.

Jorge,

Have you thought of roast duck? I've had the same problem only with wild ducks. They learn when the feeders are active and station themselves strategically for the meal. With domestic ducks maybe you could feed them in a separate area first before the feeder kicks in.

I had the same problem and am sorry to say that I never did find a solution. It seems that once they get a taste of fish food they never want anything else. They are very very persistant when a little hungry. I started out just pegging them with pebbles, when they got used to that we bought a big case of tennis balls to wiff at them. When that ceased to bother them the paintball gun worked for a little while. They eventually found their way into the freezer.
I did find that if someone was there the entire time the fish are feeding you can kinda keep them at bay but if you turn your back for one second they'll dart in right away (wich made feeding in two spots impossible)
good luck
-Scott

Give those ducks a taste of corn and they will prefer that to fish food! I have a deer feeder set up about 20 yards from the back of my pond. I set the timer to go off for just 5 seconds in the morning and evenings. 200 lbs of corn last about 4 months. The ducks and geese feed on the corn and every now and then come and eat a very small amount of fish food when I'm feeding the bluegills.

I must admit that I am not a fan of the Catfish \:\)

The only way I ever got past that problem was to snipe the suckers. The wife bought 4 ducks the same week I stocked the NEW pond with fish (it didnt go over to well) so I gave it a year..The ducks got to pooping on the porch too much for me so I gave her an ultamatum and they died a sudden death.. Till you get rid of them, you best learn to live with it!!

I've mixed them but have absolutely no idea whether the sinking pellets were eaten or just contributed to the crud on the bottom. I'm not sure whether the feed distributors absolutely say that the sinking pellets get eaten.
