I have got my pond site selected, probably end up being about 3/4 acres. my only concern now is how well it will fill up. just by a rough estimate i would say 2-2.5 acres of land slope towards it. and it is all mostly sandy clay still packs good though. I am planning on running downspouts and foundation drains in to the pond as well. DO I need worry about having enough water to fill/ keep it filled? I would hate to have an expensive dry hole. I figured worse case I could wait and see what it does then have a well dug if needed. thanks chris

On pages 9 & 10 of Publication 590 see this link there are some guidlines regarding watershed requirements for ponds. You can click on the link above, and view "Figure 11" on page 10 and zoom in to view your approximate location. I have no idea as to how accurate this is.

My guess is that in the real world you won't know until after the rain season in your area.

thanks for the response, I will look through that link. My only thinking (living in ohio) a lot of the ponds/lakes around the interstates are mostly dug borrow pits and there are a lot in really flat areas where it doesn't appear to be a lot of run off but yet they stay filled some how and i wouldn't think the state would let them run road drainage in there in case of a haz mat spill. thanks again.

Contact your local NRCS and they can give you an idea of how well the pond will fill with surrounding land that drains into it.

thanks for the response and idea, I am kinda hesitant on calling them as I have had several people tell me out local branch doesn't normally have anything good to say about pond building unless there is a stream or known water source, but none the less it shouldn't hurt to ask I guess.

They should be able to tell you how many acres will drain into your pond.
