Is there a rule of thumb for how many acres of drainage you need to support an acre of pond ? This property is in the Hill Country, has caliche type soil with good clay in it and gets about 30" of rainfall per year.

I believe it varies depending on your location, but generally 20:1 to 50:1 is ideal. Let one of the resident Texans weigh in though.

I PERSONALLY think that we can generally count on about 1/3 of the rainfall amount as runoff. One acre, one inch deep, is 27,000 gallons with the acre being 43,560 feet. Work at it from these nembers.
Disclaimer: With the drought we've been in, we will get a lot less runoff than what I think of as "average". And the hurricanes don't come like they used to.

We built a 4 acre pond on 150 acres of runoff. But the runoff has yet to appear.
