If you wanted big fish in your pond, LMB or whatever, but didnt want to add BG and have it overun, could I dig out a small pond and have it stocked with just FHM or something. Feed them, let them grow and reproduce and a few times a year dump half into the bigger pond for bass food? Anyone ever do that?

It'll be interesting to hear what the experts say but from what I understand the larger a LMB gets the larger the food it eats. A LMB's eating habits change as it grows it needs more fuel for growth. I don't think that a LMB would grow very large having to expend quite a bit of energy chasing minnows around for a meal. But wait for the experts. IIRC it takes 10 pounds of food to add 1 pound of weight to a LMB (assuming that you are not using some form of fish chow). 10 pounds of minnows is a lot of minnows to catch.

JHAP is correct. Bass will not get real big by eating mainly FHM. Although some would call a 3-4 lb large - depends on what you call a large fish.

You heard that right people, and from Dr. Perca no less. Further proof that even an idiot can learn something from these forums and help to inform others. Wait, that didn't sound right.

JHAP knows his energetics. Energy in = Energy used +- growth. Obviously if a LMB uses up more energy chasing FH than it takes in then the weight gain will be negative.

The energy is best balanced by consuming prey that is 1/4 to 1/3 the size of the bass.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
