This was staring at me through the kitchen window this morning. Later when I left to go to work she was about 8 feet from the back door when I opened it. For a couple seconds she was in shock and then got it together and ran away.

Do you think their diet including corn and soy beans makes a difference? Maybe it is the northern genetic makeup is slightly different?

Natural selection, in general bigger bodied animals retain heat better during the cold winters than smaller ones.

CJ, we've got deer around here that are pretty large if they get older. There's a really smart doe that I've seen a few times (from a distance) that'll field dress 200+ lbs.

But, I'll also bet that she'd be pretty tough to eat. She's OLD.

So you named her "Thomasina?"

Why?

Excerpt from Robert Crais' "The Monkey's Raincoat:"
"She took another microscopic bite of her sandwich, then pushed it away. Maybe she absorbed nutrients from her surroundings."

Biggest doe I ever shot field dressed at 128 in PA. That was a huge doe for the area. Most wouldn't field dress over 100 even if they had all the food they could eat. Even bucks around here rarely break the 200 pound live weight mark.

CJ, I guess with all the cropland around here the deer just eat better. The does regularly dress out 140ish nad the bucks are in the 180-200# range. I'm talking adult (2 1/2 year) and older. Talking to the local processors, they get a few bucks that top 250 field dressed a year and usually one that's pushing 300.

I have a pic of that big doe next to a buck that's dropped his antlers on my other computer. She's clearly larger than he is, and he was a middlin' 8 point. She's a lighter color than the rest of the does in the area too.

Different subspecies of whitetail too. There are 38 different subspecies of whitetail. From the tiny Key deer to the giant northern US southern Canada deer, borealis. Largest whitetail weight wise was 511 pounds.

We usually don't name ours until about September. Then they get names like Pastrami, Thuringer, and Chorizo. The best ones get first and last names, like Hirvenliha Lihapullia (Finnish) from Elvis's Finnish Kitchen. That's some good eatn!
