Hi I know this might not be the place to ask but I am looking for some information on building and constructing an indoor pond/aquarium similar to what you would see at cabales or basspro except scaled down to about 1000 to 2000 gallons... If you can direct me in the right direction or if you have any experience in this field please let me know... Thanks

AP, hit it on the head.... Monster Fish keepers is the forum to ask that question. Those guys have built some impressive aquariums. You can also check the NANFA website as well.

What's the big deal? It's nothing more a recirculating aquaculture system but the fish are in a partially glass container.

I'd build a tank behind a wall with only the front glass. Then connect a 55 gallon drum clarifier and biofilter and you're good to go.

Cecil, the problem is making sure the parts are glued together properly so they don't leak (all at once).

I think I told you about how Dad thought he could build a rectangular above ground swimming pool.......

You just need to use a container that is strong enough to contain the water and place a port on one side.

Don't forget the PFD's in case of a Tsunami.

Thanks for the reply's and yes I am talking about an aquarium with a viewing window... It seems to me that I can build the take for a fairly cost efficient way but maintaining seems to be the part that takes the money...

There's many types of filtration devices, I'm using a bubble bead filter on a 100 gal tank which is overkill, but I also use it during the summer in the 1400 gal. backyard pond, they are expensive but I found a used one.

Well, there are some knowledgeable posters on here who know how to filter and maintain indoor aquatic systems. What type of fish are you looking to keep in it?

I would like to keep anything from bass, catfish, crappie, walleye, etc.

Well, when you get it built I'd love to see it... I have a 125 gallon tank and for right now, that is more than enough work to keep up with.

Can anyone tell me what size and type of filter I would need for such a large aquarium and how much power would be needed to run it.

I'm a RBC man for bio filtration myself but they all work.

The book Small Scale Aquaculture by Steven Van Gorder will show you how to build one. You could build a downscale model if you're gong to have less than 100 lbs. of fish. If it was me I'd put the RBC and clarifier behind a wall just like the tank itself. Then put a large port window built into the wall.

after much searching, i'm probably going to end up using a small pool for my basement pond, with gravel "growbeds" to act as filters.. i've been using 1 55 gallon barrel cut in half and filled with gravel and planted veggies filtering 150 gallons of fishtank with about 35 yp and 10 or so sunfish since last september.. well.. i added 25yp in feb

I use a sand filter and a swimming pool pump on a 1000 gallon aquarium. Have kept dozens of 13lb+ largemouth in it, it is rewarding but also insanely time consuming. If it wasn't for us generating traffic with it I wouldn't mess with it. Can't tell you how many times I have stayed 3 or 4 hours late at work changing sand filter or trying to fix an air gap in the line.
