I live in West Central Indiana and own about 13 acres which have been farmed for the past several years. I now would like to construct a pond. I have a low area where there is field drains and think I could put the pond there but would like others opinions on this location. I'm going to try and post some pics so everyone can survey. Thanks
Ask again cpd159, These guys must be sleeping but they have the answers for you. I can help when it comes time to select habitat for the pond, but the pros will help you look at the installation process.
Hey, cpd159, check out this bookin the Pond Boss store, written by our very own Bob Lusk, the original Pond Boss! Also, as suggested, just sit tight for a bit and you'll get input. Most pondmeisters are enjoying the long weekend with their ponds but they'll be back in action here before long. In the meantime, why don't you also share some thoughts on your plans and goals for the pond, such as what fish species you are interested in raising and how you plan to use the pond.
Oh, and most importantly, welcome to the Pond Boss Forum! We're glad you're here! Subscribe to the magazine if you haven't done so already - great info to add to what's posted here on the forum and a cheap way to ensure that this forum continues to exist.
CP, I really can't tell anything from the pic and lots of things enter the mix when constructing a pond. Todd is right about the book. Consider things like annual rainfall, soil composition, permitting, cost, etc.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Boy, if I say "sic em", you'd better look for something to bite. Sam Shelley Rancher and Farmer Muleshoe Texas 1892-1985 RIP
1) dig test holes for core to see if desireable clay is available.
2) if the clay is there let that field grass over it will silt the pond in very quickly. I can think of 1 wheatfield pond that is 16' deep when its clean. I have cleaned it out twice in 20yrs and this year it had 11 ft of silt in it when we cleaned it out. it drains about 40 acres and has a minimum 30' of grass around it but the run off from the field still silts it in. Other than that if the clay is there no reason why you cant make a pond any where you want as long as you dont dump water in a manner that will negatively effect your neighbor or break any regulations in your state
