I am concerned that the bank run sand that is locally available will always cloud the water as it is unwashed. Will pea gravel work to cover the clay bottom? Do folks ever use this type sand or should I find washed?

Unwashed will work fine, aslong as you have a decent sized pond not a koi pond or something, don't worry about clouding.. You can use pea too it can't hurt..

I believe in catch and release. I catch then release to the grease..

You will probably need a liner under it and something to keep sand or pea gravel where you put it.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I built a beach about two years ago in my clay pond by putting some heavy duty landscape fabric down, then 4" of pea gravel and topped with a foot of unwashed sand. So far everthing has stayed put and no significant clouding of the water. Anything stirred up quickly settles.

Arond, could you tell us more about what you did? Berm? How much area, etc.? A beach is in my plans too. Any pictures of the project you could share?

arrrgggh!!! I knew this would come up. I had the same idea, and asked several people locally what they thought of a beach created around the edges of my pond where my children and dog would go in. I wanted it because i lined my pond with clay as well , and when wet it is slick , sticky ,mushy , just a big ol mess. I had the idea of lining the shores with some type of screen , and then maybe some gravel , and top it off with washed sand.
No one told me that was a good idea. They all just said , just dump it in there and smoot it out , it will be fine....
so guess what , yea i did just that , lined it with sand only , and am filling again . Now you guys bring this up!!!!

Terry, the best plant around the edges of the pond is usually bermuda grass.
