Hello to all. I'm new to the forum and I have a quick question. I'm searching for some land to buy in Massachusetts to build a 5 acre pond or so for bass fishing. Is this even possible? I was wondering if laws in Massachusetts would prohibit the building of a pond or lake on private property. Also, can I stock it? Any information on how to get started would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Frank,

As a former resident of the bay state welcome!

Typically it depends your county, township rules etc., and if you will have an effect on nearby property. Your best bet is to find out locally for that reason.

It can vary drastically from county to county and state to state. Case in point: My county does not required any permits etc. while the next county over does.

Be sure to have a test dig before you dig a pond especially in Massachusetts. If you dig down and have nothing but sand and gravel your pond won't hold water.

If you can build it most certainly you can stock it!

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Cecil,
Thanks for your answer. Now's the hard part of searching for some land capable of supporting a pond and a town and county that aren't too restrictive! I'm primarity going to make my pond a bass pond, but was thinking about stocking catfish. Would Channel catfish survive this far north and would the compete too much with the bass? What species did you have luck with? Thanks for all your help.

Channel catfish (CC) as larger fish and as predators, if not fed pellets compete with LMB for food items. LMB preying mostly during daylight and CC at night.
