If we ever get any rain around here, and I get some water in my newly dug grow out pond, I was thinking about throwing in a few RES bought from the itinerate fish truck when he stops at the local farm store next month. Will they find anything to eat in a new pond? There's no snails or minnows or anything else in it right now. Will they survive on Aquamax and any microscopic organisms that might be growing in the water?

Good question I kinda asked the same thing awhile back.. I was wondering how fish farms raise RES to 6".. Basically they don't raise them to 6" is what was told and they small survive on invertebrates.. But I never really got a great answer..

I believe in catch and release. I catch then release to the grease..

As an info source I am adding 2 charts on what lepomis eat. In short like all predatory fish - they eat what they can.
