I'm seriously considering another pond below my 1st pond. This pond would cover 10-15 acres of land. I am providing pics of the area in consideration. The odd colored strips of darker soil are the result of "mud farming" from a drilling company. This is what comes out of the earth when drilling over 7,350 down, along with water. I plan on placing a dam at the dirt road on the right side of the pics. These photos where made atop the dam of my existing 1.5 acre pond, which is probably close to 75 ft. above the lowest level, west of the dam, the area photographed. My land goes West, over the hill. The drainage into this area is good. We just received over 4 inches of rain and the area photographed has got standing water, three days later. One question is should I leave some of the standing timber or should I clearcut it all? Most are Blackjack Oak, with some cedar, hickory, cottonwood, and post oak. If I flood the whole area, the pond's depth would approach 30 ft. The area behind the dam is roughly 20+ acres. Question #2: Where would the overflow go? I can't inundate my neighbor's property with overflow from the pond without ending up in court! I have 4, 10 acre squares. I guess I should have purchase the 20 to the south of me for a overflow basin, but that 20 has sold. Maybe a smaller pond? I don't know......thinking out loud.....

I wouldn't leave any standing timber in the pond. It really serves no purpose. The tannins in the oaks can also be a pond killer. Been there, done that!
Where does the water drain to now? What would impounding change?
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

If you will click on the 3rd pic and enlarge it, you will see a cedar tree at the right, next to the road. About 50 ft. farther down the road is a low area that runs North and South. As best as I can figure, the water drains north or to the right of the pic, which would be into my neighbors property.
