I recently built a 1.5 acre pond and would like to put a stone edge/band around it. I had the excavator dig a 3-4 foot ledge to hold the stone and I planned to use #4 limestone. My issue is that due to the size I can't figure out the best way to fill the ledge with the stone. I can use a skid steer but this might be very tedious and rip up the new grass, etc. I also thought about finding a side dump bucket, stone slinger, etc. Any ideas? Thanks much!

I'm filling in some erosion issues I have on my production ponds by hand with a wheelbarrow using rip rap size stone. It's tedious and slow but I actually enjoy the exercise. Of course that wouldn't be practical on a big pond.

Can you use a front loader after the grass is established? Believe it or not I've had the best luck with landscape size sorted stone and applied with a frontloader. The stone kind of pushes itself into the bank over time.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

If the grass is established around the pond, I doubt that you'll find equipment that won't disturb it.

I think a stone slinger or side dump will be the least invasive, but both will still require some ground repair and stray stone removal. The amount of stray stone will depend on the operators level of expertise.

I would check around with local redi-mix companies and check if they have a stone slinger truck.

Here's a thought: Cement bags, offset-stacked with rebar driven vertically through the bags - and anchored into the embankment to prevent upset into the pond. Then, hose it down and let chemistry do its thing....
Something along this line....

Thanks for the ideas guys. I'm afraid there's no silver bullet so I'll research my options.
