Hello All,

Love this forum- and have a question I would like to pose: I have about a 2 acre pond I am currently in the process of pumping up. (pond is located very near a creek here in Central/Southern Texas that will always be a water source)- I have a submersible well pump rigged in that creek to maintain water level.

On to my question- When we cut in the pond, I left a 'strip' that is about 20 feet wide, Flat, and will be in approx 3ft of water normally-up to the bank. In this area, I would like to plant some trees that will create shade/cover etc. Near the creek and lakes in this area, I see alot of bald cypress which are beautiful- I am wondering if this is a good choice in a farm pond, I do understand they are thirsty trees. Is there a better option?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

We have some cypress. I even planted a few. They do spread all over the pond by floating seeds. If you don't want the pond encircled with them you will have to kill off the ones you don't want. I don't know if you can plant them submerged (yes I know they grow in water). I planted them at the bank. There are several threads here.

I was told as long as the foliage was out of the water, a cypress will live. I am not sure how fast it would grow though. I planted some seedlings while the pond was low and the ones that were completely covered died, the ones perpetually covered since grew from 1' tall to about 2-3', and the ones on dry land grew to 4-5' in 2 summers. They have not leafed out yet this year so I do not know how they faired being flooded for another winter(darned beaver plugged up my spillway).
