how deep of water do channel cats need to live? my old house had a pond out back with only bullheads the pond was about 2feet deep and they never died. idk how similar the channel cats are though

bullheads will live on dirt for centuries.. Channel cat need some good depth under a deep freeze to live. I really have know answer for your question but my GUESS or OPINION. Would be 6-8ft minimum..


I believe in catch and release. I catch then release to the grease..

CC have pretty much thrived in our pond for decades, I think it maxes out around 6-8ft at full pool. We don't have to worry about ice though. I don't remember it ever freezing over completely.

Ice gets 12-18in.here and the CCs do great in 6-8ft of water at our lake.

Your winter climate is much like mine, do your channel cats get fed during open water? and how old is that channel cat in the photo?

This is a city lake,CCs are on there own there.Don't know what age a 12-14in CC would be.This one I bet is under a yr.
