I have a 5 acre lake with bluegill and LMB. I also have about 14 grass carp who do a pretty good job of keeping down the vegetation. We swam in the lake last summer, and it was great! But we had to jump from the dock to a raft to get in, as the bottom is kinda mucky.
How can I prepare a swimming area in a portion of the lake where we can walk in?

Hey fishwife! Kinda mucky might mean a couple of inches or a couple of feet. Normally if you walk in the same area over and over you will fix your problem just by doing what you are doing! Although my wife can't stand that creepy crawly feeling of muck between her toes and those little bubbles as they slide their way up her leg. So she does your jump method until me and the boys do the "dirty work"

Cover it with a thick layer of sand. Repeat as needed (yearly)

I believe in catch and release. I catch then release to the grease..

Anything that will stir up the bottom and move the muck (light fluffy stuff) out of the area will work. Even a trolling motor set close to shore moving water out into the pond and walking/raking the bottom so the current generated pushes the stirred up stuff out into the pond.

Like Bluegillerkiller said, if the shoreline is accessable and the dirt isn't too soft, dumping a couple truckloads of sand would help get it in shape quickly.
