Have searched forum for negatives on using cedar (juniper) trees for structure and have not seen any. Yet in NE Texas there is a belief, rumor or myth that cedars give off noxious gasses when decomposing that will kill fish, etc, etc. Can anyone fill me in on real facts. Thanks.

Theres not a whole lot of difference between cedar trees and christmas trees. I put christmas trees in my pond every year. You can wait and see what others have to say but I think there fine.

Bobby, I use cedar trees often and have for more than 25 years. I have yet to see any dead fish from their use. At the same time, I don't put them in small ponds. I use them to enhance or create structure in larger lakes.
I don't know of scientific studies or literature that confirms or negates any of the wives tales.
That's my thoughts.

I have used a lot of cedar and other xmas trees and never had any problems.

I've used both large and small cedars in my one acre ponds. No problems with cedars but I will never again use green oaks. I killed off my pond for 2 years due to the tannins in post oaks.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
