I'm having a new house built where my only choice for TV (aside from an antenna) is via a satellite dish. If I want to have rooms pre-wired is there anything special I need to do? From what I can tell coax cable will work and I think each TV location needs to have its own cable (no splitters).

Some dvr's require 2 coax cables.. And run phone lines to all your tv/satellite locations. I would run 2 of everything to each tv incase one goes bad it's fairly cheap and easy whm there's no drywall. Also if your doing wall mounted flatscreens make sure to run loop lines to where your accessories will be like if your tv is 6' up on a wall and your Dvr is on a dresser make sure you have hidden lines from dresser to tv same with surround and power.. Also do extra bracing where you plan on putting your tv (wall mounted). I put cross members where I put up towel racks and everything makes it slot easier don't need to find studs..

I believe in catch and release. I catch then release to the grease..

My answer is yes and no to your Q.
you need a coacs to the tuner of the signal from the micro head in the parabolic dish.
From the tuner you can transpond the signal wire less, I did that to the game room in my shed aprox 40 feet fom main house thru solid walls and can recive much further.
Problem is I have to be with in the reach(room)of tuner to change chaneles, and you can't watch multiple number of channels unless you have multiple number of tuners(recivers).
It's common for the tuners here to day that they read twin so you can record one channel whilst watching another, however on the ones I have seen they can't broadcast(send) externaly the second signal only save(record) in the harddisk for later.
So if you want to watch differente chanels on differente locations you need more than one reciever.
A lot off the new tv's have buildt in recievers (digital/hd) they need the coax point, and does not relay (transpond) the signal.
I was comfertable with the tuners in one spot and transpond the signal from one room (kids control) now I have two satelite dishes and two tuners (recivers) house/shed then I can transpond from bothe to other tv's on my property from each of them iff needed?

Rob:

If you do go with a dish, and you are in the snow belt, make sure the dish is easily accessable in the winter. My dish would get covered in snow and the reception would drop waaayyyy off. Since they had to put the dish on the roof, my only option was to hook up a hose to the hot water line in the laundry room and hose off the dish with a sweeper nozzle. Not fun when the wind was right and blew the water spray back at me.

I would have paid to watch that Scot. grin

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Run Cat6 computer cables also...all the newer BluRays, satellite receivers and HDTV's update software via the internet. Most also stream video over the net now too.

Good point I also ran 2 cat 6 to each tv and receiver. You can use cat 5 it's the same as cat 6 just a little less insulation and almost half price

IIRC, the Cat6 cable handles twice the bandwidth of Cat5e and should handle the next 5 or 6 generations of computers and the increased speed.
