I have to run XP on my laptop to be compatible with the machines I have to tap in to on ships.
There were some small boats(tug/tows) that the owner's so called teckies had placed PCs with Vista on them. I guess they were for GP use, but also ran chart software. One or 2 looks at that; I decided to not touch Vista. Does anyone have or has used it? What do you think? What about 7? Not so computer savvy, so not interested in changing horses on a whim. Can't say for anyone else, but I have to run an NT compatible OS for my industry specific software to work. XP Pro has been the only one. XP Home Edition won't cut it. Vista won't work and I am not sure about 7. Needless to say, Industrial Platforms were developed around the stability of NT. I certainly do not want to try a new OS and put a lot of things at risk.

Trend Micro test is done and I wont be giving them my bucks. It allowed several generic downloaders to be installed. These things search for Trojans while browsing or on websites and try infect your computer.
I am trying PCTools now, and that is what found the downloaders. I still have Norton and McAfee.
This is the free version you can get from google. They booted out AVG due to too many problems and complaints. It runs pretty seamlessly. I shall see how this works.
Got the new inet hooked up. The Modem is 60 ft up in a Pine Tree and has an RG something cable to the Cisco Router.
We paid for the starter system at 1.5mb/256k and average about 2.4mb/450k.
This is wireless, and after the bugs were worked out, work's really good with 5 meatheads trying to mess the thing up.
I can pick it up with my HP laptop, maybe, 400 feet or so with the router inside and me outside in the woods.
I don't want to muck up the works, but I would like to put my Cradlepoint router on this. I know I can pick it up a good 650 feet with the router being inside.
Seeing that things are working well, Sprint will be getting the boot soon.
Oh well, enough boring stuff.

You lost me with this. Is this a wireless phone subscription? Does it have an internal antenna in the modem?? Dont they have an option for an external antenna and get the modem back inside? Confused why a coax. cable from modem to router. That would mean it is still RF link to router? Who is this with?
I have Wild Blue in the boonies in Miss.(the pond, and when working around NOLA). Just had it turned back on at the 2nd level, 89 per month. OK during the day, but bogs down in evening when we rednecks are surfing.

All it is, is a modem up in a Pine Tree with a coax cable running to the router inside the house, no power, except to the router and it is wireless before and after that. The Modem, picks up a radio (wireless) signal from a tower, maybe eight miles away. I think it is between 2.4-5 Ghz range. The only wire is the rg cable from the modem to the router, plus the power cord on the router.
This is not phone hookup or satellite.
Wild Blue was over sold in our area a few years ago and not available.
The modem is actually in the antenna, and that is the reason for the rg cable to the router. Looks like a big pizza box up in the tree, but that is picking up the signal from the tower on the south side of Fremont Lake.
So It is wireless. If the only wires exist on this system from a tree to the router that is plugged in and no other wires exist to computers and such, I think that classifies as a bit wireless.

OK. Terminology kinks. I get that the router is wireless transmit and laptops are wireless receive. The explanation that the modem is inside the waterproof antenna unit; that adds clarity. Is it a 'stick' type vertical antenna, or is the antenna part of the 'pizza box'. I know, too many questions. Same as my sons say. Bear in mind, I am an RF(as in VHF, HF, Sat comm., etc. engineer on shipboard). Question remains for me; is it part of a "wireless" phone system. ie..is it the same sprint system(I think you said so long sprint"). Is it only data link? Just prying for the capabilities, type of service, name of service, web site, etc. I need decent wireless(cell ph, and data link in Miss. Verizon is not working well for me there.
thanks.

I'm thinking it is a microwave, direct link and the pizza box has to be pointed toward the tower? or is it omni directional?
sorry

thanks. No antenna that I can see. The antenna is the pizza box with the modem someplace inside. I did not climb the tree to inspect everything. NO IT IS NOT PART OF MY WIRELESS SPRINT SYSTEM THAT I HAVE HAD FOR CLOSE TO THREE YEARS IN THE BOONIES. This is only a local service, and I am glad they actually did it. But I think they are bouncing the signal from NCATS to shoot it further. Fremont, MI... Gerber Baby Food!

Congrats, JKB. Looks like your county stepped up to the plate. Fat chance that will happen where I need it. I just looked at the NCATS web site. Nice service and very reasonable price. As I said, I pay 89 for 2nd tier service with Wild Blue; about 450k thruput on a good day. I am envious. Glad you got hooked up.

Burger,
It was a total bust.
6 months of total frustration, numerous phone calls because it was not working. No response from the ISP. 150.00 installation fee ended up just over 500.00. Highly Incompetent Employees. Excuses for everything under the sun and nothing was their fault. Heck, they even blamed the Muskegon River for interfering with the radio waves.
I kept logs on transmissions and they shut it off on a regular basis, you could set your clock by it!!! Sometimes for three or four days in a row.
A carefully worded letter is being drafted, and I expect a refund!
So now, I am trying Virgin Mobile Broadband as a last option. It is better than dial up, but has it's moments.
Looked into satellite and actually ordered it then cancelled because they shut you off at 300mb/day. I get CAD files bigger than that! I was looking at a 6GB file the other day to quote a project. That would take 20 or so days on satellite, or cost a pile of cash on Sprint.
I'll have to get a new RG6 cable and hook up my repeater. That should boost the signal a bit.
