Hello all, had a question about my new pond. I recently dug a 3/4 acre pond in august and on the far side of my pond I have water seepeing in one side of my pond. My concern is that water seeping in now can possibly meen water seeping out when its full? or is this just a case of ground water finding its way into my pond? This pond is a total excavation pond with no sides built upo just a big hole in the ground and is stick to your shoes southern ohio clay. Thanks in advanced! Here is a link to my photos from the new meber topics http://www.pondboss.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=238755#Post238755

Hi and welcome. This is a great site -- a MUST site -- for anyone with a pond or with interet in one day having one.
Is the water seeping in, in a general way or is there a small specific spot where it's seeping in?
Theoretically, water can go both ways in an opening, depending on which side has the most pressure. But I'm not a soil expert and am as interested as you in seeing the replies you get.
I don't think I've had that situation, but oddly on my older lake there is a spot about the size of a big card table just a few yards on the down side of my emergency spillway that stays damp year round. It rarely produces enough moisture to trickle down, and it rarely dries completely. It's just one of those places that stays visibly wet and that's really all it does. It's also on a hillside. Water can do odd things underground.
Welcome aboard!

Thanks for the welocme Billlake. The water is seeping in through an area about 6 ft wide and is 8to10 feet down from the top of the bank, it basicaly is making this section bank look like it had just rained and the rest of the exposed pond banks are bone dry. There isnt any water running or trickling down from the spot it just basicaly is making the soil is wet in that area. This area of the pond is about 12 to 14 ft deep. Just was curious to see if any one else has had this happen when they dug a new pond. will try to get pics of the seap tomorrow when im down at the cabin.

my pond was built in a "holler/hollow"- southern slang for a valley. we opened up several small springs of water that were really flowing good when we excavated my pond. they were all coming from higher ground, not just pushing up from below. it looks to me like it would be hard to stop that flow or make it turn into a drain. i dont think the pond can cause enough head pressure to push water higher than the surface level of the pond. i am no expert, just giving my opinion. my pond has stayed full for over 2 years now, even in the driest times.
