Hey guys, I'm getting ready to seed and plant my yard, which runs downhill to my pond. In order to properly seed I'm spraying the whole yard with a herbicide recommended by a local store the herbacide is called BUCANEER. I will spray it all let everything die then disc and smooth the whole property. My concerns are runoff into the pond and how ling is the herbacide active.. Say I spray, then disc and it rains will I have issues with killing stuff in my pond. What's you guys suggestions?? Thanks always BGK

Are you sure the herbicide name is Buccaneer? and not a brand name. The only thing I came up with was Buccaneer Glyophsate 41%. This is the same thing that roundup is made from and a generic version of it. There was nothing on the label that say you shouldn't spray it around ponds.
I really question the use of this herbicdie though. Since you are disking the area after application I not sure you are really gaining anything by using it. Realize that glyophsate only kills actively growing plants which may make it easier to disk but will not stop weeds from growing in the newly planted area. If a lot of weeds are present I would mow the area to be planted real short and just disk it. Planting a lawn in the fall gives you a leg up since the weed seeds are mostly dormant and will not present much competition for the grass seed. ALso planting in the fall you get the advantages of cooler temperatures and dew in the morning to keep the plants growing after germination.
One last thing it is getting a little late in the year to try an establish a lawn, I would get this planted ASAP

It says on the label kills everything including the roots. I can't see how killing everything before disking wouldn't be more beneficial than just disking. I've read in many places fall us the best time to seed a yard I'm not trying to get a full lawn I thought it was more important to start it before winter so it's ready for fall. Temps here are still 90+. Also I was spraying then waiting for it too die before disking not right after one another if that makes a difference

Also the ground is completely covered in what I call wire grass, those plants covered in fury thorns, and other weeds. It's not just spotty weeds

That's one of the generic labeled "round-ups". I've used it before, just not right by the pond, and it has worked just like round-up. I don't think it will cause any problems using it like you describe.

Disking is going to kill most of it. Maybe not as much as gly will but close. The bigger issue is that disking will bring new weed seeds to the surface and gly does nothing for that. They will germinate and compete with what you plant. The good thing is that this is a much bigger problem in the spring then the fall, since most weed seeds will not germinate at this time of year.
I am over in Schuyler County and it has been 90s here also for the last two days (not to mention our 1.5 inches of rain last night). But the issue with needing to plant now is that we are less than 60 days from first frost and grass needs to establish roots before this time. Time is running out for that.
