ok. im back...pond still not full but holding right now...i think it has finally settled as far as wicking .my question is that i have a small spring about 20 ft below where the finished water level of the pond...it is about 150 feet from the pond...i was thinking of damming it up and putting some type of small pump there just to keep up with evaporation...i was going to just use some 2x12s or something...but i thought someone here might have some good ideas on damming and maybe what kind of pump to use...im guessing the spring produces 4 to 6 gpm..thanks

Jason, if you have electricity close by, a submersible well pump on a switch would be very efficiant. Just dig a nice hole and line it with rock.

yeah i have electricity...what type of switch? do you think like a float switch would work because a well pump at 10 gpm would eventually dry the hole up....thanks

I was thinking of a modified float switch that activates when there is a larger volume of water to pump and shuts off when nearly dry to reduce start-up frequency. Perhaps a couple small contacts on a long swing float...
Cheaper to run 5 minutes than the start-up cost and reduces the wear on the pump

yeah ive seen some contact switches on the web.......you can put them as far as way from each other as you want...maybe ill put them on the dam i build...the reason i was thinking of 2x12s is a friend of mine told a long time ago farmers used to do that for watering holes for their horses...i was thinking about 4 2x12s with a hole in the top one and some pvc to get the run off away from the back side of the dam so it doesnt wash it out ...think that will work?

I see no reason why 2X12's wouldn't work. I like rock so I never have to do it again is all.

Sure Randy, a cat, blame it on the cat.

That's what I do on tequila.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
