I made up this "copy version" of the BoJo buglight from pictures I found on the web. I'm not trying to infringe on any copyrights, but there are no dealers to my knowledge up here in Canada and the cost of getting one here just seems stupid! I had most of this stuff in my garage and it was fun to put it together. I'm not advocating it as a way to bypass Bob and Joe. They had a great idea and they are reasonable in price for most folks in the States. If I added up the hours spent on it, I would far surpass their price! LOL It works well and is drawing a good number of small sunfish and rock bass to it each night. The coolest thing I have seen is the swarms of Daphnia it attracts! Amazing. I built the little floating dock just to hold the light.

Nice setup, and beautiful clear water you have there.
I wonder about the original Bojo design. The solid shade covers the entire bulb, blocking off most of the light that would attract distant bugs. The swatter wires could be made from 1/32 music wire, and curved upward a little to catch bugs from a wider area.
It just occurred to me that a bare light may bother close neighbors.

I have a clamp on light off a small pier to attract my bluegill fry to come to my belt feeder at night. I'll take a picture when I get a chance. There is no bug killing device but it seems there are no shortage of bugs that light on the water.
What's really surprising is the yellow perch fingerlings (2 to 3 inches) that nail bugs on the surface under their respective light on the perch production pond. I've never thought of them much as surface feeders but they enjoy nailing small bugs on the surface!
Let us know if you ever get any large bluegills to come under your light. I have bug light I've used on a couple of ponds and the largest bluegills have no interest in surface feeding under them. Mainly 3 to 5 inch bluegills are the only interested fish.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

The motor is a 1550 RPM fan motor off a refrigerated display case. It is mounted to the underside of the shade and the hub holds the wires in place. I used some #14 AWG solid copper wire for the whips. They seem to work fine. Total wattage of this light is about 70 watts. It has the photo cell on top and runs all night.

mount closer to the water if you can. The amount of bugs that hit the water will really go up.

Thanks Greg, it is about 2 to 3' above the water. How low should it be mounted?
Bruce, this photo at dusk does not do the water any justice. It is like a swimming pool with at least 10' visibility. When I snorkel, you can see the entire bottom.
MRHELLO, I'm not sure what those weeds are. I'll take some better pics and a pic of another pond weed we have to see if anyone else knows. I'm thinking the pond has a surface area of about 1 1/2 acres? It is very irregular in shape. I have an arial shot I took a couple of years ago in the Fall. I'll dig that out.

As clsoe as you feel it is not going to get flooded. We usually set about 20"-24" above the water. I thought it was a godo three feet above but pic may make it look higher than it is.

Here is the arial shot of the property and pond. This was taken in the Fall of 2008 and the place was kind of dismal looking at that time of year. My friend has a single engine plane and he took me up to get some pictures. I need to get a summer shot! You can see bottom everywhere in the pond. Overflow is under the small bridge in the upper left hand corner. The property extends beyond the river towards the lower left hand side. Total area is 3 1/2 acres, but we have no immediate neighbours. There is about 200 acres of bush surrounding this property.

Great looking place, Rattletrap2! To get a reasonable estimate on surface acreage of your pond, check out this link for an easy way of measuring.

Todd, Thanks. That would put the pond surface at about .8 to 1 acre.

Hey, that's a nice size, particularly on that lot. If I didn't mention it before, your place is tremendous looking and the layout rocks!

Great picture....
I see what looks like light poles that surround the pond. They powered or solar?

I see what looks like light poles that surround the pond. They powered or solar? There are 12 light posts, all powered. Three at the North end have 15 amp receptacles as well. I have them running through a control where I use a wireless remote to turn them all on at night if we are out there. The buglight is powered off of one of the posts, but is not in this photo.

Great looking pond RT, you obviously put alot of planning into it.
Which came first the house or pond?

Which came first the house or pond? Adirondack Pond, I can't take credit for either! Both were existing when we moved here three years ago. All I do is upkeep and make a few modifications, but thanks just the same. I'm thinking the pond was first, because there is no way to get equipment in there without crossing the septic tile bed at the front of the house. Both have been here for about 35 years.

Or do you have a hook up somewhere to a town sewage plant/ Cecil, The septic bed lies between the house and the three large Blue Spruce trees. I was afraid of this proximity, so we had the pond water tested by an independent lab the first summer we lived here. They told me the pond water was drinkable and cleaner than some peoples wells!

Thanks!
