I have a nice 8 foot water drop in my pond overflow box capable of turning a 2' diameter water wheel. What type of aeration pump could I use that would run off this water wheel? (belt or chain driven pump). ANY Ideas? I would like to use this free energy source to aerate instead of using electricity. Some suggestions I was given were a lawn mower motor with the air line coming out of the spark plug hole and the other, an old single stage compressor that the wheel could turn
Thanks

The best areators is the padle wheel, so I would have the water wheel drive a padel wheel.
Much easier setup.

It depends on your criteria Andy. Are you considering efficiency or just amount of D.O. produced? There's nothing more efficient than moving water with air.

My original perch supplier has ditched the paddle wheels for diffuser aeration, not because they produce more oxygen, but because they have other benefits. The diffusers prevent stratification which can cause problems later in the season.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I'm thinking off a belt or chain driven unit DIY.
I think it would be easy to build the padleweel, and the lawnmover engin sounds complicated.

Hey, vwrust, welcome to Pond Boss! Great to have you here and getting involved! Good question, and one I don't know anything about, so hang tight for more input beyond what you've gotten already. In the meantime, try browsing these threads that may get you started on your research.

Again, welcome!
