I've never used the Calendar feature and don't know what it's function is. I'll look into it - I believe it's simply to schedule important events and am not aware it's ever been enabled or used by the forum. It doesn't have any bearing on whether or not birthdays are recognized. The only way a birthday id icon will appear is if the member has elected to enter their birthdate in their profile.
