My favorite vacation spot "The Chain of Lakes" near Alexandria, MN was discovered to have a Zebra Mussel infestation in 2 of the lakes in the 7+ lake chain last year. Does anyone know how zebra mussels effect the fishery in natural lakes. I looked on the web, but it mostly talks about them attatching to docks, boats, and water intakes. Couldn't find anything about what the do to the fishery.
Good morning Dave, I've checked the ships systems, and everything appears to be running normally.

I've read here that zebra mussels go through tons of plankton, so it can be really difficult, if not possibly downright impossible, to get a good bloom going. If that's the case, then the small stuff in the food chain is missing and that has a trickle up effect. With a key ingredient to the food chain missing, everybody suffers to some extent or other is how I understand the negative part of their impact. Of course, I believe the flipside is that you'll have really pretty, clear water!

Here is a link that has some good info: Zebra Mussels I've hauled up my fair share of them on tackle and cast nets off the piers on Lake Michigan.
