bright coppernose, flat belly, few black scale tips? male or female? about 8-9" long.

I think you were 99% there with your identification. The black scale tips are a pretty good identifier of a male. The size and shape of the gill flap is next. Male flaps are larger than most female gill flaps. Lastly, the color of the breast is one more indicator. Male breasts are generally darker than females.

the flat belly confused me. i thought it might have been a female that had just layed her eggs. i guess maybe the male just hasnt eaten while it was gaurding the bed? the body was`really light colored except for the black belly. the other males i have been catching have the orange belly, really fat, and darker body.

That is absolutely a male. I know this with absolute certainty because I have read and memorized all the information posted here on Pond Boss related to properly identifying male versus female BG.









Well that and because Bruce said it was a male.
