My plague is gnats.

It can be intolerable around my pond with gnats. Some of which I am told are not gnats but a no-see-um.

I do know this, I am highly allergic to whatever they are that bite. Not like a mosquito, I develop a huge, like a quarter, welt that is as hard as a rock and lasts 3-4 days. If bitten under eye, the entire eye swells almost shut. For me to work around the pond I have t use deet and not miss a spot on face. Last week while putting cedars in pond we had to quit because the gnats were just too much and I ended up with two bites on neck and one on the top of my ear...the next day I looked like a wrestler with my ear swollen so much.

Thermacell works on them but any wind at all destroys its effectiveness. Deet has no effect except stopping the bites, otherwise there will be swarm in spite of the deet.

The biting gnats are what caused me to find out about the vanilla mix. When the gnats got us, my Wife looked like I had beaten her.

Try it.

+1 on the Thermacell.

I have had a couple for 2 or 3 years now. I conducted a very scientific experiment to test its effectiveness.

Step 1: Put lawn chair on deck where mosquitoes were known to hang out.

Step 2: Place Thermacell under chair and turn on.

Step 3: Verify mosquitoes were hungry. Yep, they were.

Step 4: Sit in chair after Thermacell warmed up 5 or so minutes.

Step 5: Enjoy the evening because mosquitoes would not enter the safey zone.

Step 6: Leave chair and walk 20 feet away. Run back to chair to escape ravenous hords of mosquitoes.

Another situation that sold me was 2 years ago. Opening day of Youth Deer Season in September. Ground blind had been set out for 2 weeks. I took my daughter and we climbed into the blind. We were immediately attacked by mosquitoes. I cranked on the Thermacell. In 5 minutes, there was not 1 mosquito left in the blind.

The wind is an issue. You need to set the unit upwind and let the plume blow towards you.

I hate repellent, so this was a great product.

I see a huge flaw in your scientific analysis.

There is no mention of cold beer ingestion. laugh

Sitting in a plume of insecticide is bound to reduce mosquito bites, but don't think this is somehow safer than applying DEET to you clothing.

Give it a try. We call them Buffalo Gnats here.

Roger that on DEET; I used to use "Muskol" fishing in the beaver ponds for brookies...melted my fishing rod handle....I prefer to destroy my liver in other ways!

Try pouring Coke on your car and watch the paint peel. I prefer safety tests on animals rather than fishing rods.

Put a steel nail in a jar with Coke and watch it disappear.

Same thing happens to my Coke products when they come in contact with Jim Beam JHAP, it's a strange phenomenon, I continue to study it and promise to report all future findings as they become relevant.
