I've tried putting hornwort into my 3/4 acre pond to help with water quality, aeration, and fish cover. The plants lasted for 2 weeks max. The pond levels fall 2-4 feet in the summer depending upon rainfall (Savannah, Ga area); side are relatively steep...it was a county dug pond. Does anyone have any advice for sustaining plant life? Or better submerged plant variety? Pond contains turtles, BG's, Ch Cats, F1 LMB. aerated, good PH level.

Hornwort does not have roots. Also known as Coontail. It's best to anchor it in some gravel or mud. If that does not work I might try Elodea. You might not think so at this point, but plants, once they get established underwater can overtake a pond.
Remember this ol Frog saying: I never put something in a pond I cannot easily get out.

GSB, welcome to the forum...
Pond Frog brings up a good point about invasive aquatic plants... The species of submerged aquatic plant I would look strongly at is spiral eel grass. You can purchase it on-line, propagate it and then spread it around the pond to fill in. I would also consider American pondweed.

Pond Frog & CJBS2000: Thanks for the input . My main concern was if the plants were being eaten by the fish; water quality issue; or lack of planting properly. I tried coontail last year, and eelgrass(Vallisneria)two years ago. I just threw them in the pond. I don't believe they survived longer than 1 month. I won't add any non-native plants, and want to pick a type that triploid grass carp will eat if the plants start to get out of control. Any other input on this?
